How to List Skills on a Resume (With Role-Specific Examples)
A well-structured Skills section helps recruiters and applicant tracking systems verify your technical tools, domain methods, and certifications at a glance.
Three Rules for an Effective Resume Skills Section
1. Aim for 6 to 15 focused skills
Listing every tool you have ever heard of dilutes your strongest qualifications. Focus on skills required by your target role.
2. Skip percentage bars and dots
Graphics like “4 out of 5 stars in SQL” fail ATS text extraction and leave hiring managers guessing what you actually know.
3. Echo key skills in your bullets
Every major skill in your Skills list should also appear in at least one Work Experience or Project bullet point to prove how you applied it.
Software Engineering & Data
List specific languages, frameworks, databases, and cloud infrastructure tools you can use in production.
Product, Marketing & Growth
Pair strategic competencies with the analytics, CRM, and automation platforms you operate.
Operations, Admin & Project Management
Highlight governance frameworks, scheduling systems, and financial or documentation tools.
Customer Support & Healthcare
Include ticketing/EMR platforms, compliance credentials, and high-trust interpersonal capabilities.
